Cell Membrane: Structure

Down below are the notes that I took. In the notes you will read and learn all about cells and their structure. In these notes you will also learn about the parts of a cell and how they work. I made a PowerPoint but I could not download it onto my blogger. Hope you enjoy these notes.

Cell Membrane:
Structure
Notes by:
Leah Romero

žCells and Their Size

žCells are not big, they’re very small.

žCells are very small compared to everything else in the world.

¡For example, it’s sort of like looking out an airplane and everything below is so tiny

žThe parts that make up the cell are even smaller.

žThe parts of a Cell

žThe parts of cells are called organelles

žNucleus

¡Only one per cell

¡Holds DNA

¢Held together by proteins

žMitochondrion

¡Power plant in the cell

¡Powered by sugars

žThe Parts of a Cell Continued:

žChloroplasts

¡Organelles that are found only in plant cells.

¡They are green

¡Photosynthesis

¡Thylakoids

¢membranes  inside of the chloroplasts.

žThe ER’S

¡Rough ER

¢Dotted with ribosomes

¡Smooth ER

¡Members that extend from the outer membrane of the nucleus.

žGolgi Apparatus

žA structure that is used to modify, store, and transport things that come from the ER

žComposed of membrane stacks

žPeroxisomes

žMembrane-bound bags

¡Help break down and dispose of the waste of the cell

žOften found under the microbodies category

žCentrosome

žCell structure contains a pair of centrioles.

¡Used by the cell for microtubule organization

žCell Membrane

žComposed of many different parts

¡Phospholipids

¡Carbohydrates

¡Cholesterols

¡proteins

žPhospholipids

žMake up a big part of the cell membrane

žThe heads of them are hydrophilic

¡Attracted to water

žHave fatty acid tails

¡The part of the phospholipid that is hydrophobic

¡DON’T like water

žCarbohydrates

žWhen attached to phospholipids or proteins, they are called glycolipids or glycoproteins

žOn the membrane they stick out of the exracellular face.

¡Chains of carbohydrates that attach to a phospholipid or a protein.

žCholesterols

žPlay a big part in the membrane

žThey attach to the fatty acid tails and moderates the fluidity of the cell membrane

žIf there was no Cholesterols, the membrane would move more freely

žIn a group of 4 or 5

žProteins

žAre found in the cell membrane

žFew different types of proteins

¡Peripheral protein

¢Found either on the intercellular face or on the extracellular face.

¡Integral protein

¢Transmembrane protein- goes  all the way through the membrane

¢Integral protein- only goes half way through the membrane

That’s the end! Now you should know all about cells and their function!

HOPE YOU ENJOYED IT!
